The central subsidy: Industrial Development Administration
Under the Ministry of Economic Affairs guidelines for the electric scooter industry (經濟部提升電動機車產業補助實施要點), buying an approved model qualifies for a subsidy. The amount has two levels by vehicle class: NT$7,000 per scooter for ordinary heavy classes 1 and 2 and ordinary light class 1, and NT$5,100 for ordinary light class 2 and small light scooters. The class is the one printed on the registration certificate (行照) once the scooter is registered.
Two top-ups can be added:
- Battery top-up, NT$3,000: the model’s battery cells, anode material, electrolyte and copper foil are all made in Taiwan.
- Scrappage top-up, NT$1,000: within 12 months before or 6 months after buying, you retire a petrol scooter at least 10 years old and complete its recycling and deregistration.
A few limits apply. Each person can receive the subsidy for one scooter during the scheme. Only approved models qualify; they are listed in the approved models search on the e-scooter industry site. Point 6 of the guidelines says that if the year’s budget runs out, the subsidy is suspended for the rest of that year. Companies buying scooters to rent out receive lower amounts.
The Ministry of Environment’s trade-in reward
The Ministry of Environment runs a vehicle replacement matching platform. Scrap a petrol scooter at least 10 years old and buy an electric one, and the ministry pays NT$1,000. The platform also carries offers from other organisations that buy the emission reductions, each with its own price, area, quota and deadline, and new ones are added over time, so we link to the platform rather than list amounts.
One legal change to be aware of: the regulations for the older greenhouse-gas reward for swapping an old scooter for an electric one were repealed on 7 September 2026. Check the current eligibility and legal basis on the platform before you apply.
City and county top-ups
Most cities and counties add their own money, typically for “scrap an old scooter and buy electric” and for “buy a new electric scooter”. The amounts, quotas and conditions on the old scooter vary widely, are re-announced early each year and can run out early. The Industrial Development Administration’s summary page (dated 21 July 2026 when we checked it) has a table for every city and county; use it together with your local environmental protection bureau’s notice.
Dates and what may change
The central scheme runs from 11 December 2022 to 31 December 2026, and both the application and payment must be completed within that period. The administration’s counter showed 27,792 scooters subsidised in 2026 as of 29 September, so the scheme is still running. Nothing has been announced about 2027. We will update this page when a new round is published, and after the deadline it will say automatically that this round has ended.
